  2. Autumn Statement 2014 – Simplification of employment benefits

Earlier in the year four consultations were published following Osborne’s announcements in the 2014 Budget. Some of the results were announced as part of this Autumn Statement.

The first change is that a new statutory trivial benefit exemption will apply to benefits costing less than £50 from April 2015. The other confirmed revision is the removal of the current £8,500 ‘P9D’ category of employee. Currently, employees (who are not directors) earning below £8,500 do not pay tax on certain benefits. Instead, new exemptions are set to be introduced for carers and ministers of religion.

Provisions to be confirmed are the exemption of certain reimbursed expenses, which may remove the need for dispensations, and a system to support voluntary payrolling of benefits. We expect more details on these in the full consultation response documents within the next few weeks.

  3. Midlands law firm appoints employment expert

A Midlands-based law firm has appointed an employment law expert to support businesses in the region.

Amanda Pillinger steps in as solicitor for Thomas Guise Solicitors, to offer advice to employers and employees, as well as existing clients. In addition she has established a human resources and health and safety service, offering up-to-date and clear, bespoke advice to businesses on a retainer basis.

Based across offices in Studley, Worcester, Birmingham and London, Amanda arrives from MFG Solicitors LLP and brings previous experience in employment law, as well as licensing law across pubs, nightclubs and supermarkets.

Amanda, who lives in Alcester, said: “We spend around one third of our adult lives at work, and HR has a huge impact on whether that experience is positive. This is why I’m excited to be a part of a firm that’s setting up such a fantastic, all-encompassing service to support West Midlands and London businesses and their staff.”

Thomas Guise believes its knowledgeable team and in-depth legal experience will beat the quality, flexibility and price offered by many national human resources companies currently taking on outsourcing work. It is confident that the service will allow clients to focus on their core business, by alleviating the stress associated with changing employment and health and safety legislation.

Amanda added: “My job is to help employers get their business right – protecting their company and assets, while understanding the responsibility they have to offer staff a good working environment.

“I’m also passionate about making sure employees have the legal support they need, playing a vital part in helping them to move on with their lives if they are badly treated by their employer,” she added.
