The Worcester pancake race – TG strikes again!

Back to news 17 February 2010

The Magnificent Thomas Guise team, wearing our aerodynamic racing black robes, reached the semi-finals in this year's races in front of the Guildhall, Worcester. After 3rd place in 2008 and 2nd place last year, our hoped-for progression to champions was thwarted by other teams adopting sharp tactics such as setting off promptly on “go”, running faster than us, and catching the pancake.

Our racing kit was good, but outshone by the Mayor’s team in formal red robes and by the cheerleaders team (no description necessary).

As soon as one year finishes, thoughts turn to next year’s competition and how to improve. However good the team there is always room for improvement (© Alex Ferguson, c.1990).

Training is therefore required to address the following:

1. Watching the starter. He’s the one with the flag. The man with the daft hat and microphone is a red herring.

2. “Go” means make your way promptly to the other side of the course and back. It is not a suggestion that you contemplate it.

3. Pancake, from pan, to air, to pan. Not pavement.

4. Concentrate on the race. Not the cheerleaders. They are red herrings.
